Canvass Chic - from simplicity to the sublime

Beautiful meadow with yurt

Yurts and tents have reappeared around the globe as trendy, eco-smart lodging. From simple state park lodging to luxury tents framed by Uluru (Ayers Rock) in Australia’s interior, you can find a canvass option that meets your travel needs. Yurts have the characteristic round shape, a design based on the round Mongolian tents used in the steppes. The round shape provides less wind resistance and plenty of functional space inside. Tents and bungalows refer to square or rectangle canvass options, a more familiar North American camping structure.

Canvass options run the gamut from comfy luxury to rustic shelter. Canvass tent resorts provide a simple structure that can be seasonal i.e. set up but then removed to allow nature to take her course or they can be more permanent but with a much smaller environmental footprint than a traditional building. The resorts often combine individual tent shelters with central bathing and dining facilities. Green Concierge Travel presents a variety of options below that show the diversity of options that can meet the needs of a range of travelers.

On the less expensive side, rustic tent experiences can be a great outing for a family or a couple. Below are 2 very different examples of a basic tent experience.

  • Eagle River, AK: At the end of the Eagle River valley, you come to the Eagle River Nature Center. The Nature Center is surrounded by trails including the Crow Pass Trail part of the Historic Iditarod Trail. One and a half miles up the trail, is the River Trail Yurt. The yurt sleeps 4 and includes parking. It provides a very intimate although not extremely remote look into Alaska's wildlands. Moose and other wildlife are the main residents in the Chugach State Park and the upper end of the Eagle River valley.

Non Member Price: $65.00 per day from 2pm to noon of the following day. Includes parking at the Nature Center for that same time period for up to four cars. Maximum number of persons: 4.

  • Oregon State Parks has incorporated the use of yurts into their camp ground system. You can reserve rustic yurts at 14 of the state's coastal parks and 4 inland parks. Oregon State Parks has provided a wonderful variety of ways to explore all that Oregon offers. As with many State Parks, book early as the residents of the state know a good deal! Visit the Oregon Parks web site to view the different parks, the options for accommodations and to make reservations. Note: some of the parks now allow pets.

Rates for reserving a yurt at one of Oregon’s parks runs between $27 and $30 per night. You bring your own bedding food and dishes.

There are some very attractive options in the mid-price range and not just in North America!

Located along a section of scenic Highway 1 between Half Moon Bay and Santa Cruz, Costanoa offers the perfect location with a combination of lodging options. Canvass cabins or bungalows dot the property. Spaced to be readily accessible from any cabin, comfort stations include a central courtyard with fireplace, sauna, heated concrete floors, private indoor and outdoor showers, sinks, flush toilets, and skylights.

From here you are free to explore the coast. The estuaries around Pescadero provide wonderful bird watching and there is a marine mammal sanctuary at Ano Nuevo State Reserve a few miles south where elephant seals breed and rest. You can access the redwoods directly by trails into Big Basin State Park or close by Butano State Park. Berry picking, local farms and further south the wineries north of Santa Cruz all offer great day trips!

Rates: Pricing varies depending on the style and size of your canvass home but plan on spending from $90 to $150 per night depending on the season. As this part of the coastline is mostly about the scenery, wildlife and big trees, Costanoa offers coastal cuisine consisting of fresh, locally harvested and often organic produce and seafood.

Unwind and relax in your yurt in the midst of olive groves in Andalucia, Spain. You have five different yurt decors to choose from – Mongolian, Jaipur, Safari, Maimani, and Afghani – each set up as a double room with traditional furniture and exotic textiles. Your yurt includes a private bathroom and a meadow with sitting area or enjoy one of the hammocks shaded by a cork tree. The property runs on solar power with bedside lights and sockets for recharging phones and laptops.

Continental breakfast is offered every day and included in the price. Dinner is offered four nights a week and there is a fully stocked bar open in the evenings. You can arrange to have a pack lunch for your daily excursions. This is an ideal location for exploring ancient caves and Paleolithic paintings, the sherry region of Spain Jerez or the characteristic "white villages" (white washed walls with red tiled roofs) Cortes de la Frontera or Gaucin.

Rates and Bookings for 2009: Hoopoe Yurt Hotel will be accepting bookings now for May 6th May to October 14th, 2009 Changeover days are on Wednesdays and Saturdays, so bookings can be 3, 4 or 7 days (or 10, 11 or 14). Double yurts are $165 per night (130 EU) including breakfast for two. Sorry but no young children.

On the luxury end, camps can be found around the world. But below are two very different examples.

  • The Resort at Paws Up, Greenough, MT. Located in the Blackfoot Valley, 30 miles northeast of Missoula MT, your luxury escape combines the best of ranch life with Montana adventure and comfort.

The luxury tents at Tent City and River Camp are available from May through late September. You have access to a bathhouse with six master bathrooms (one per tent). Each site has its own Dining Pavillion. Paws Up has coined a new name for this type of camping - glamping (glamour camping).

Paws Up incorporates traditional ranch activities – riding, flyfishing, and target shooting – with more modern activities like geo caching and river rafting. You can hike or bike the ranch using trails or old logging roads and explore the local ghost town. And when you are done, enjoy the spa facilities or the view from your front porch and the food creatively prepared with many locally grown or harvested ingredients.

Rates: Rates for a canvass cabin in Tent City or River Camp runs from $695 - $895 per person per night depending on the tent and dates of stay. Rates include all meals served at the dining pavillion and one (1) roundtrip airport transfer per unit, all on-property transportation and access to 37,000 acres of ranch land. Rates listed do not include alcohol, activities, 7% Montana State Tax, or the 18% resort fee.

  • Longitude 131°, Uluru, Australia. This luxury eco-tent resort affords the outback visitor with sunrise and sunset views of Uluru (Ayers Rock). From here you can visit Uluru or Kata Tjuta (the Olgas), both formations or striking red rock that pierce the rugged landscape of the Australian interior. Aboriginal culture defines the area and the approach to your visit to this landscape.

The resort, located just outside the National Park boundary, is set on a dune. Tents have been built on platforms with all the modern comforts including blinds that raise to reveal the amazing outback landscape whenever the mood strikes. In the center of Australia, you will see examples of Australia’s unique flora and fauna. Get out and explore this incredible region!

Rates: $1980 per person, two people per tent. The price is all inclusive (all meals, accommodations, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, entrance to the Uluru – Kata Tjuta National Park, Ayers Rock airport transfers, and tours during your stay).
