The Alaska Marine Highway System runs the Alaska Ferry. This ferry system is a great alternative for independent travelers who want to travel the Inside passage or who want to visit some of the remote reaches of coastal Alaska. Popular ferry stops include Juneau, Ketchikan, Sitka, Seward and Kodiak Island. You can get on and off the ferry but make sure to have reservations in advance as the ferry is a popular mode of travel in the summer for locals and visitors alike.
